Associate Editors and Columnists

Associate editors/columnists will edit and proofread a large volume of IJOP columns and write position papers and/or column bits.  They are solely responsible for spelling, grammar, AP style, accuracy, taste, consistency and clarity of their articles.

 

ImageMervat M. Fahmy is a teaching assistant at the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences, Mansoura University, Egypt. She holds a Master degree in the computer and information sciences. The Master thesis subject was about the adaptation of data mining techniques for network intrusion detection. Her research interests include data mining, pattern recognition, network security, mobile computing, protocol design, information retrieval systems, and forensic analysis for cyber crime. She has published 3 scientific papers in international conferences and journals in the area of network intrusion detection and data mining. The publications were under the supervision of Professor M. A. El-Sharkawy from Ain Shams University and Dr. A. M. Riad from Mansoura University. Two other scientific papers are in progress. She also helped in the preparation of one book chapter currently used as a part of the university curriculum. She has assisted in preparing the curricula of the Information Systems and Information Technology departments in the Faculty of Computer and Information Sciences, Mansoura University. She is currently participating in the faculty’s quality assurance and accreditation project.

 

Image Eduardo B. Fernandez (Eduardo Fernandez-Buglioni) is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. He has published numerous papers on authorization models, object-oriented analysis and design, and security patterns. He has written four books on these subjects, the most recent being a book on security patterns.. He has lectured all over the world at both academic and industrial meetings. He has created and taught several graduate and undergraduate courses and industrial tutorials. His current interests include security patterns and web services security. He holds a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UCLA. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and a Member of ACM. He is an active consultant for industry, including assignments with IBM, Allied Signal, Motorola, Lucent, and others.

 

ImageRicardo Jardim-Goncalves holds a PhD degree in Industrial Information Systems by the New University of Lisbon. He is Auxiliar Professor at the New University of Lisbon, Faculty of Sciences and Technology, and Senior Researcher at UNINOVA institute, where he is the director of the Group for Research in Interoperability of Systems (GRIS). He is graduated in Computer Science, with MSc in Operational Research and Systems Engineering. His research activities have focused on Standard-based Intelligent Integration Frameworks for Interoperability, covering architectures, methodologies and toolkits to support improved development, harmonisation and implementation of standards for data exchange in industry, from design to e-business. He has been technical international project leader for more than 15 years, with more than 60 papers published in conferences, journals and books. He is guest editor of 7 specila issues in international journals, e.g., Computers in Industry, Journal of Intelligent Manufactiring). He is project leader in ISO TC184/SC4. He received the IMS award in 2007 and the Internacional William Conroy Standards Professional Award in 2003. He was general conference chair of I-ESA 2007 and CE2003 (www.i-esa.org, isg.uninova.pt/ce2003/) with more than 400 participants each.

 

ImagePankaj Kamthan ’s educational background is in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, and Computer Science. He has taught in academia and industry for past several years, has been a Technical Editor for McGraw-Hill, has served on program committees of international conferences, and is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Technology Enhanced Learning and the International Journal of Teaching and Case Studies. His teaching and research interests include Document, Model, and Software Quality; Knowledge Representation; Requirements Engineering; Markup Languages; Ontology Engineering; Representation of Patterns; and Web Engineering.

  

 

ImageJinyoul Lee received his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and has been an Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems at State University of New York at Binghamton. His research interests include virtual organization, knowledge management, and enterprise integration. His most recent research is focusing on virtualization in the Internet environment on social structuration process. Recently, his research finds the breakthrough in BioMedical Informatics that opens new opportunities of information processing in the fields of Biology and Health science.

 

ImageDr. Mariofanna Milanova  is Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, USA. She received her M. Sc. degree in Expert Systems and AI in 1991 and her  Ph.D  in Computer Science in 1995 from Technical University, Sofia, Bulgaria. She did her post-doctoral research in visual perception in University of Paderborn, Germany. Dr. Milanova has extensive academic experience at various academic and research organizations including the Navy SPAWARS System Center, San Diego, USA, University of Louisville, USA, National Polytechnic Institute Research Center, Mexico, Technical University of Sofia, Bulgaria, University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, University of Porto, Portugal, Polytechnic University of Catalunya, Spain, University of Paderborn, Germany. She has been granted from German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), NSF, European Community, NATO and FAPESP State of Sao Paulo Research Foundation.

Dr Milanova is a Senior Member of the IEEE and Computer Society, member of IAPR, member of the IEEE Women in Engineering, member of Society of Neuroscience and a member of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society. Milanova serves as a book editor of two books and associate editor of several international conference proceedings including the ICMLA International Conference on Machine Learning and Application and the METMBS Mathematics and Engineering Techniques in Medicine and Biological Sciences.   Milanova chaired ICMLA’05 Conference. Milanova chaired the series of the IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration (2001, 2003-2006) and the MEMBS’ 01 and MEMBS’ 03.  Her main research interests are in the areas of artificial intelligence, biomedical signal processing and computational neuroscience, computer vision and communications, machine learning,  privacy and security based on biometric research  She has published and co-authored more than 60 publications,  more than  33 journal papers,  5 book chapters, 2 patents and numerous conference papers.

 

ImageAlok Mishra is Associate Professor of Computer and Software Engineering at Atilim University, Ankara Turkey. He had his Ph.D. in Computer Science (Software Engineering) besides dual Masters in Computer Science & Applications and Human Resource Management. His areas of interest and research are software engineering, information system, information & knowledge management and object oriented analysis & design. He had extensive experience of distance  and online education related to computers and management courses. He has published articles, book chapters and book-reviews related to software engineering and information system in refereed journals, books and conferences including International Journal of Information Management, Government Information Quarterly, IET-Software,  Behaviour and Information Technology, Public Personnel Management, European Journal of Engineering Education, International Journal of Information Technology and Management.  

 

 

 

ImageNitendra Rajput has been working as a Research Staff Member at IBM India Research Lab, New Delhi since March 1998. His areas of interest include Speech Processing, Digital Signal Processing, Image Processing, Conversational Systems on Pervasive devices. In the last 9 years, he has worked on Audio-Visual speech recognition, Hindi speech recognition, automatic assessment of language skills for call center agents and on conversational systems for pervasive devices. He has published and reviewed papers in top conferences in his area. Prior to joining IBM Research, he completed his masters from IIT Bombay in Communications. His thesis work was on Adaptive Image Compression using Non Orthogonal Transforms. Nitendra has been the PC organizing chair for the workshop on Speech in Mobile and Pervasive Enviromnents at
ACM MobileHCI 2006 and ACM MobileHCI 2007. He has been on the program committee for ICISIP 2005 and has reviewed papers for Eurasip Journal on Signal Processing, ICON, NCC, ICISIP, INDICON, SiMPE, Best Paper committee for ICIP 2005, ICIP 2006.

 

Dumitru Roman works as a researcher at Digital Enterprise Research Institute Innsbruck (http://www.deri.at), Austria, in the area of semantically-enabled service-oriented architectures. Since joining DERI he has been involved in several FP5 and FP6 EU funded projects, e.g. SWWS, DIP, SWING, SUPER, etc., in the area of semantic Web and Web services. He is the main author of the Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) and co-authored many WSMO related documents, including the Springer book "Enabling Semantic Web Services". Before joining DERI Innsbruck, he received a Diploma Engineer in Computer Science from the University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. His previous research includes composition of semantically enabled services in the context of open agent architectures, planning techniques, reconfigurable hardware-software co-design, and networking (he is also CCNA). Dumitru Roman initiated and chaired various conferences and workshops in the area of service-orientation, e.g. MoSO, SerComp, mda4soa, semantics4ws, etc., and currently serves as an Associate Editor of the International Journal of Web Services Practices (IJWSP).

 

ImageSanjeev Segan is a Solutions Architect at the Knowledge Management department of Siemens Corporate Research, Princeton. Sanjeev holds an MS in Computer Science from the University of Nevada, Reno and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Birla Institute of Technology, India.  At Siemens, Sanjeev has been working on the architecture, design and implementation of enterprise applications, web based and computer telephony software systems. These include Enterprise Java Bean based applications, Enterprise Portals, Enterprise Content Management systems, Information Security Assessment and Modeling, E-Payment systems, Enterprise Hospital Management Systems, and Audio rendering of Web Content via a Telephone User Interface(TUI).  He is currently working on various projects in the areas of Service Oriented Architecture, Business Process Modeling, and Application Integration using technologies from SAP and Oracle. Sanjeev has received a patent for his work on WebSelect, a tool that allows users to build personalizes web pages that consist of snippets of other web pages. He is a Sun certified Java developer and an InterWoven certified consultant.

 

Image Scott E. Schneider , residing and working in close proximity to Research Triangle Park in North Carolina, leads pattern tooling development within IBM Rational, specializing on the specification and automation of model-operative patterns.  Scott holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology with specialty in digital signal processing and computer science.  He is chair of the IBM Pattern Tooling Architectural Directions Workgroup and an active member of the IBM Software Group Patterns Governance Board.  Scott actively engages IBM Academy of Technology endeavors including technical studies concerning model-driven development, pattern-based engineering, static analysis and program understanding as well as pattern and anti-pattern conferences run as pattern writer workshops.  Scott speaks at software development conferences such as EclipseCon and EclipseWorld as well as IBM internal conferences.  Scott maintains strong relationships with his colleagues in IBM Research and is currently performing research (beyond his daily development duties) on the prose project, a pattern reasoning and object-oriented specification environment built on top of Rational Software Architect and the Eclipse platform.  The basis of his research is a highly-consumable pattern particularization domain-specific language built-on the conceptual foundations of declarative programming languages, logic, micro-pattern primitives and pattern composition. Currently, Scott is a Senior Software Engineer at IBM having previously held the position of Senior Staff Software Engineer at Rational Software from 1996 to 2002.  While at Rational in Redmond, Washington, he focused on modeling tool development focused on the Rational Rose and XDE platforms and expanding its applicability to domains such as object-relational mapping, data modeling, Java enterprise modeling and pattern application automation. 

 

 

Image Shasha Wu is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Spring Arbor University from 2005 to present. Dr. Wu is a Professional Member of the ACM. He was a co-chair of the second IEEE International Workshop on Software Stability at Work (SSW 2007) in the IEEE International Conference on Information Reuse and Integration (IEEE IRI-2007). He was also a program committee of the ChiliPLoP workshop (2003) and the 13th International Symposium on Temporal Representation and Reasoning (TIME 2006). Dr. Wu received an MS and a Ph.D. in computer science, from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.  His research topic was Information Visualization Methods for GIS, Constraint and Spatiotemporal Databases. He has taught at the Spring Arbor University and has research publications that span cognitive science, management science and computer science and engineering. Dr. Wu has a demonstrated research and consulting experience in management and implementation of software solutions with a special emphasis on software engineering and spatial Database applications. He has diverse research and development exposure in spatiotemporal databases systems, GIS applications, knowledge-based systems, and enterprise computing software. He is one of the major developers of the MLPQ Constraint Database Management System when he was at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He was a senior software design engineer that designed and implemented several enterprise computing software suits for two software companies from 1997 to 2001. He is also co-author of several journal and conference papers on stable analysis and design patterns, software stability modeling, information visualization and reasoning, spatiotemporal database systems, and sensor networking.

ImageYuni Xia is an assistant professor of Computer and Information Science at Indiana University Purdue University – Indianapolis. She holds a bachelor degree from the Huazhong University of Science and Technology of China, an MS and a PhD degree from Purdue University. Her research includes databases, data mining, data uncertainty management, data stream management, ubiquitous/pervasive computing and bioinformatics.  She was the program co-chair of the first ACM international workshop on Health and Information Knowledge Management (HIKM) and recently served on the program committee of the IEEE 21st International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA 2007), the IEEE/ACS 5th International Conference on Computer Systems and Applications (AICCSA 2007), the International Conference on Intelligent Environments(IE 2007), The IEEE International Workshop on Information Fusion and Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Networks(SensorFusion 2007) and the International Workshop on Knowledge Management and Discovery for Ubiquitous and Pervasive Applications (KUPA 2007).

 

ImageChunsheng Yang is a Research Officer at the Institute for Information Technology of the National Research Council of Canada. He is interested in data mining, reasoning technologies such as case-based reasoning, rule-based reasoning and hybrid reasoning, multi-agent systems, and distributed computing. He received an Hons. B.Sc in Electronic Engineering from Harbin Engineering University, China, an M.Sc. in computer science from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, and a Ph.D. from National Hiroshima University, Japan. He worked with Fujitsu Inc., Japan, as a Senior Engineer and engaged on the development of ATM Network Management Systems. He was an Assistant Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 1986 to 1990 working on Hypercube Distributed Computer Systems. Dr. Yang has been the author for over 40 papers and book chapters published in the referred journals and conference proceedings. He was a Program Co-Chair for the 17th International Conference on Industry and Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems. Dr. Yang is a guest editor for the International Journal of Applied Intelligence. He has served Program Committees for many conferences and institutions, and has been a reviewer for many conferences, journals, and organizations, including Applied Intelligence, NSERC, IEEE Trans., ACM KDD, PAKDD, AAMAS, IEA/AIE and so on. Dr. Yang is a senior IEEE member and ACM member.

 

ImageLaura Zavala  has a B.S. degree in Computer Science and a M.S. degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Veracruz, Mexico. She is a Computer Science PhD candidate at the University of South Carolina, where she conducts research on the application of AI techniques into the practice of software engineering. On this area, she has presented several papers at workshops and conferences such as AAMAS, IJCAI, and ICWS, as well as book chapters in software robustness related books. Laura Zavala has an extensive work experience as software engineer, systems analyst, application developer, object oriented developer, database designer, database developer, and Web applications developer. While working in the Artificial Intelligence department at the University of Veracruz, she developed commercial, high-revenue-generating education-related software. She also created training plans and support training materials, and imparted training workshops to different educational institutions (users of the software) along the country. She also has research experience on AI, multiagent systems, service oriented computing, semantic web, and software engineering. She has served on program committees for international conferences and workshops on agents and software engineering. Laura Zavala is a member of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines), Eta Kappa Nu (Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society), IEEE Service Oriented Computing Society, IEEE Computer Society, American Society for Quality, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and IEEE Women in Engineering Society.

 

ImageOrit Hazzan is an associate professor at the Technion's Department of Education in Technology and Science. Her main research topic human aspects of software engineering deals with cognitive and social issues of software engineering. She is co-author (with Jim Tomayko) of Human Aspects of Software Engineering (2004). Hazzan combines her academic research with consulting to several Israeli software development companies on the assimilation of agile methods and change management. She presents her work at computer science and software engineering education conferences as well as conferences on software engineering in general, and agile development in particular. ImageJason McC. Smith is a researcher at IBM Watson Research in the Hudson River Valley of NY, USA, where he pursues software understanding tools and techniques.  He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005, where he created SPQR, a practical toolset to detect instances of known design patterns directly from unannotated source code in a language independent manner.  To this end, Dr. Smith developed the rho calculus, a reliance-based denotational semantics for defining interactions among OO code elements; the Elemental Design Patterns catalog, a suite of formalized concepts that are the basis of OO design; the concept of isotopic analysis, which alleviates the need for slavish adherence to pattern structures, while retaining their semantic components and inherent flexibility; and POML, the Pattern/Object Markup Language, as a practical XML interchange format for the description of the hierarchical semantics and abstractions of programming.  Unable to avoid seeing patterns everywhere he looks, Dr. Smith believes that semantic awareness of the abstractions of programming is the foundation of comprehension and maintainability of code.  His background in physics (B.S. University of Washington 1993) and mathematics (B.S. University ofWashington 1993) gives him a practical approach to the field: theory drives tools which drive understanding which drives development.  Side projects along the way have included a stint as a professional military flight simulator developer, and the FaceTop distributed document collaboration video conferencing environment for pair programming.  Currently, Dr. Smithis involved with several internal projects at IBM ranging from deep understanding of legacy code, to guiding the development of Business Process Patterns.  He maintains a strong collaboration with UNC as well, and is working with the next generation of graduate students interested inpatterns research.
